A look at Campaigns in Port Royal
June 7, 2024Factions of Port Royal: Part 1
June 19, 2024We have been receiving lots of questions on what exactly the player aide decks contains. Well fear not, and wonder no longer! Lets take a closer look at what to expect.
Firstly, I want to stress that this deck is not required to play. While the mechanics of Blood & Plunder played a part in the development of this game, and many mechanics are similar, this is a different gaming experience. Part of our design goals with Port Royal was to have a game that was light on components and big on action.
That leads us nicely into what the purpose of the deck is. As I’ve explained in a few comments, its made up of game aide to reduce the need to reference the rule book during game play. Specifically, anything that happens during the game (not post game) and requires rolling on a table, can instead be done using the cards. The deck is broken down into a series of smaller decks for the different tables.
The first couple of decks are used to replace the D10 tables found in the rule book for the scenario generator. Instead of rolling on the table for special scenarios rules and deployment style, simply draw a card from each deck to determine which result your game will use. The cards also include the explanations and necessary diagrams to assist you in setting up your games.
The definite winner (IMHO) of the most fun deck is the events table. Instead of flipping through the book to get to the tables and then rolling for your event, simply draw a card to see what exciting calamity will befall either you or (hopefully) you opponent.
The final set of decks is used to run the AI the AI system. This one is the most handy in my opinion. The AI system that is used for solo and co-op play requires players to use a deck of standard playing cards to determine the actions and reactions of the virtual opponent. Players familiar with the Blood & Plunder solitaire rules (found here: https://ik.imagekit.io/firelockgames/DLC/BP/BP-Solitaire-compressed_zHxGuWe8iH.pdf) will be very familiar with the system as the Port Royal AI is based on its proven mechanics. The included cards for the AI will be broken down into 3 smaller decks, each one for the different action columns found in the rules. Simply draw from the appropriate deck to determine which actions the opposing forces will take.
Well, there’s a look at what you can expect from the Player Aide deck. I hope you found it useful. I look forward to the surge toward the next stretch goal as you all rush to add them as add-ons or upgrade your pledge levels thanks to my brilliant presentation (Lilian helped too I guess). 😎
